Marvel Team-Up #90 featuring Spider-Man and The Beast
February 1980
"DEATH ON THE AIR"
The Beast & Spider-Man battle Modular Man and Killer Shrike with the fate of Cable TV on the line!
Summary:
Peter Parker takes Cissy Ironwood to the 1980 Empire State University Technology Expo and finds all the girls, including his date, smitten by Beast of the Avengers! Two uninvited guests, Killer Shrike and the Modular Man engage the heroes in a brawl and steal a cellular condenser in order to restore Modular Man to his human form.
The device requires a massive power source, however, and the villains target a cable TV station at the Empire State Building, where the issue's climatic battles happens. In the end, the Modular Man turns on Shrike and attempts to become a powerful being made of pure energy, with the heroes ultimately defeating him by overloading his exoskeleton. Shrike escapes while the Modular Man is dispersed into thin air, presumably ending his life.
Issue Notes:
This issue sees the presumed death of the Modular Man, who first appeared in a 1977 issue of Rampaging Hulk.
Killer Shrike, who escapes at the conclusion of the story, was depending on Modular Man to help piece together his missing memory.
Cissy Ironwood is a brief romantic interest of Peter Parker who will soon move out West after her father is killed in Marvel Team-Up Annual #2.
Art was fine, but this was a basic, goofy story. The villains flying their own helicopter above an Empre State Building antennae was comical cheese.
Bullpen Bulletins:
Stan Lee waxes philosophical about how social conditions have changed and not human beings. He's referring to the "generation gap" between people of different ages. Everyone wants to be happy, so enjoy life, because you'll one day be the"grumpy" adult you can't relate to. Deep thoughts.
Overall Grade: C-
